Children Centres are an idea that has developed from the Sure Start programme.  The Government's plan is to have services for families with young children all under one roof or within a short distance of each other – making valuable community services much more accessible to families. National targets have been set up whereby there will be 17 new Centres in Croydon between 2006 – 2008.  These are in addition to existing ones; making 28 Centres in total. Some Centres will be brand new buildings, others already exist.

Data has been collected which enabled detailed maps to be drawn up of the ‘Reach Areas’ in Croydon.  These maps are not the same as the Sure Start map which determines eligibility of membership.  Instead, all Croydon residents with young children will have access to one or more Children’s Centre within each of its 22 wards.

There will be no immediate changes to existing Sure Start services, just slight changes in the administrative and managerial structure.  The Government intend for all identified areas in the UK to have a Children Centre by 2010.

Each Centre will be required by law to provide certain services; i.e. drop-ins, health care and child and family services; plus there will be additional services such as behaviour management (ABC) and Training and Employability advise and opportunities.  Each Centre will be tailor made according to the needs of its area.

There are already two established Children Centres in Croydon.  These are Peppermint children's Centre and Broad Green Children Centre; the latter comprising of the London Road site, Kingsley and Canterbury site.

The Parent Co-Ordinator for Broad Green Children's Centre is Lorraine Musgrave.  Lorraine's role is to liaise with staff and parents at London Road, Kingsley and Canterbury and ensure that community services are efficiently planned and executed.  Lorraine also works closely with the Sure Start Family Support Co-Ordinator, the Health Team and is part of the Event Planning Committee which plan all community events for the year.
